FREE "Learn to Fly Fish" Clinics (May - October)

Try one of our introductory clinics and see why so many people are hooked on the great sport of fly fishing!
Our highly knowledgeable Green Mountain Troutfitters instructors will give you the foundation for what could be your new lifelong passion.
All the basics are covered in this crash course designed to cover the basic fundamentals of fly fishing.

Clinic Overview:
I. Fly Fishing Components
a. Fly Rod - different flexes, lengths, weights
b. Fly reel – purpose
c. Fly line – tapers, colors, quality levels
d. Leader – choosing the right one
e. Tippet – prolonging leader life
f. Fly – nymphs, dry flies, streamers

II. Rigging/Stringing up for fishing
a. stretching fly line
b. connecting & straightening leader
c. tying on fly
d. basic knots (clinch, perfection loop, surgeons loop)

III. Fly rod gripping techniques & stance
a. thumb on top
b. forefinger on top
c. casting stance

IV. The Casting Stroke
a. the “clock” method; casting from 10 to 2
b. the shorter the line, the shorter the casting stroke and vice-versa
c. adjusting the loop size; achieving the “candy cane” shape

V. The “Pick up and Lay down”
a. gracefully picking up line
b. accelerating into back cast
c. applying forward cast and laying out line

VI. Tailing Loops – how to avoid them
a. causes – overpowering rod, unsmooth casting stroke, rod tip not following accurate path

VII. Shooting Line
a. fly fishing is a two handed sport
b. you must have a good back cast to effectively shoot line
c. letting go of line at completion of power stroke; forming “o.k.” sign
d. retrieving / stripping in line

VIII. False Casting
a. what is it and why false cast?
b. how much is too much?
c. timing is everything

IX. Roll Casting
a. no room to back cast….then just roll cast!
b. forming the “D” loop

2 Day Fly Fishing School (May - September)

This comprehensive 2 Day School is absolutely the best method for learning the great sport of fly fishing. We feel that education is the most crucial element of fly fishing and, in turn, we have developed this course to help you develop skills that will bring you confidence as a fly fisher.

Day 1 – Green Mountain Troutfitters (4 hours)
The first day will be spent working on essential fly fishing skills. Developing a perfect cast, knots you will need to know, rigging your rod, fly fishing techniques, different types of flies, aquatic life that trout feed on, trout species and behavior, and equipment will all be covered on day 1

Day 2 – Local Trout Stream (4 hours)
The Second day is spent on the water accompanied by a professional fishing guide. You will learn about wading safety, where trout are in a river, stream construction, riffles, pools, runs, what trout eat, how to fish dry flies, nymphs, and streamers, and how to hook, play, land and safely release trout.
*1:2 Guide : Angler ratio*

*Included is comprehensive instruction for the 2 day session, a fishing license(1 day), use of a rod, reel, line and waders, flies, leaders, tippet, and in fact everything you need will be provided for you.

*A minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 students may enroll in this school.

*Students are encouraged to bring a notebook for taking notes.
