The copper john is a great, heavy, durable fly. It comes in many colors and all are productive. Here we have a black copper john which we have found to be a top producing color early and late in the V.T season.

Step 1

Place bead on the hook and wrap on wire for underbody. Add a dubbing ball. Tie on thread and cover hook shank/wire under body with a thin layer of thread. Start a small taper from the hook bend to the wire.

Step 2

Tie in the tails and secure them up until the wire and cut excess. Now is the time to create a full even taper from the tail to the throax. This must be smooth for the outer black wire reveals even minor variations.

Step 3

Now take 2 strands of black wire and tie them on on the top of the body and tie thread towrds hook bend. Securing the wire the whole time. Now advance the thread back up the body to about mid thorax. Clip excess wire off front of the fly. Now grab the 2 wires and wind them tightly up the body to mid-thorax to meet the thread. Tie off and clip excess.

Step 4

At start of thorax area start the wingcase. Tie in 2 strands of flashabou or holographic flash and clip excess. Now tie in 4-6 stands of peacock herl. Wind the strands together and proceed to wrap them around the hook shank toward the eye. Tie off peacock and clip excess.

Step 5

Tie in hen hackle and wrap around 1 time and tie off. Pull back feather barbs into leg position and tie thread over barbs. Now Bring the 2 stands of flashabou forward andtie off. Clip excess.

Step 6

Now form a small bubble of epoxy or knot sense* over the flashabou and thorax area. This tends to magnify the light reflected from the flahabou, imitating an air bubble in the wingcase of an insect.

* Take your pic. Epoxy is more durable and adheres better but is less forgiving to mistakes and takes longer. Knot sense is easier to use, faster, and more forgiving but, does not adhere as well. Tuffleye is a product that is said to be better than both but is not cheap.
