Don't be fooled by the steps in this pattern. It's a relatively easy pattern to tie and is one that should be in every anglers fly box. Most commonly immitating an adult stone fly, the stimulator can also double as an adult caddis when tied in smaller sizes and skittered across the water's surface.
Experiment with different bodies and head colors and you're sure to love this fly

Step 1

Tie on thread and work to bend of hook above the point. Tie in a small clump of elk hair for the tail

Step 2

Tie in ribbing at tail. Cut a small strip of foam and cut the end at 45 degree angle. Tie in the cut end of foam directly behind the tail. Form an even underbody on the hook shank with the thread and stop at thorax

Step 3

With thread at thorax wind the foam forward to meet the thread. Tie in the foam and clip excess

Step 4

Next, tie in rooster hackle at the thorax. Palmer hackle back toward the bend and then bind down by wrapping ribbing forward toward the hook eye stopping at the thorax. Clip excess

Step 5

Stack elk hair and tie in the wing so it extends to the end of the tail. Clip all of the flared butt ends and clean it up with thread wraps

Step 6

Tie in grizzly hackle and dub forward to hook eye. Wrap hackle forward and tie in behind the hook eye. Clip excess and whip finish.
